The history of Saint Paul’s

Saint Paul is the oldest daughter church of Saint Mary’s Collegiate church in Port Elizabeth.

The Foundation Stone

In the 18th of October 1854 the foundation stone for the Old Saint Paul’s in North End was laid by Bishop John Armstrong, bishop of Grahamstown at that time.

The Bishop of Cape Town

The bishop of Cape Town and the bishop of Grahamstown pledged £450 on the condition that the congregation would raise a further £250.

Reverend Edwin Giles

Reverend Edwin Giles was appointed as the rector. At the age of 30, he arrived in Port Elizabeth to a congregation that had no church building yet built; no Rectory and he also was not assured of a stipend but had to depend on the offerings of the congregation.

First Reading

Peter raised Tabitha (also called Dorcas), a beloved disciple known for her good deeds, from the dead in Joppa. After her death, disciples called Peter from nearby Lydda. He prayed and brought her back to life, leading many to believe in the Lord. Peter then stayed in Joppa for some time.

(Acts 9:36–43)

Psalm

Psalm 23 describes God as a caring shepherd who guides, provides, and restores. The speaker feels no lack and trusts God’s presence, even in dark times. God’s protection brings comfort, and the psalm ends with a promise of lifelong goodness and mercy.

(Psalm 23)

Second Reading

A great multitude from every nation worshiped before the throne and the Lamb, crying, “Salvation belongs to our God!” Angels joined in praise. The Lamb will shepherd them, and God will wipe away every tear.

(Revelation 7:9–17)

Gospel

During the Feast of Dedication, Jesus tells the Jewish leaders that his works show he is the Messiah. He promises eternal life to his followers and says no one can take them from his or the Father’s hand, declaring his unity with the Father.

(John 10:22–30)
